Hadith
In another verson of Abu Da’ud is:
“If you perform ablution rinse your mouth”.
وَلِأَبِي دَاوُدَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ: { إِذَا تَوَضَّأْتَ فَمَضْمِضْ } [1] .
And Al-Baihaqi reported:
“Water is pure unless any impure thing is added which changes its smell, taste and colour”.
وَلِلْبَيْهَقِيِّ: { اَلْمَاءُ طَاهِرٌ إِلَّا إِنْ تَغَيَّرَ رِيحُهُ, أَوْ طَعْمُهُ, أَوْ لَوْنُهُ; بِنَجَاسَةٍ تَحْدُثُ فِيهِ } [1] .
Narrated ‘Uthman (rad):
While performing Wudu, the Prophet (ﷺ) would run (his fingers) through his beard. [Reported by At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Khuzaima graded it Sahih].
وَعَنْ عُثْمَانَ - رضى الله عنه - { أَنَّ اَلنَّبِيَّ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -كَانَ يُخَلِّلُ لِحْيَتَهُ فِي اَلْوُضُوءِ } أَخْرَجَهُ اَلتِّرْمِذِيُّ, وَصَحَّحَهُ اِبْنُ خُزَيْمَة َ [1] .
Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Zaid (rad):
Two thirds of a Mudd (of water) was brought to he Prophet (ﷺ) (for ablution) so he began rubbing his arms. [Reported by Ahmed, and Ibn Khuzaima graded it Sahih].
وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ - رضى الله عنه - { أَنَّ اَلنَّبِيَّ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -أَتَى بِثُلُثَيْ مُدٍّ, فَجَعَلَ يَدْلُكُ ذِرَاعَيْهِ } أَخْرَجَهُ أَحْمَدُ, وَصَحَّحَهُ اِبْنُ خُزَيْمَة َ [1] .
Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Zaid (rad):
He saw the Prophet (ﷺ) taking some water to wipe his ears other than the water he had taken to wipe his head. [Reported by Al-Baihaqi, who said that its Isnad (chain of narrators) is authentic and At-Tirmidhi also graded it Sahih].
وَعَنْهُ, { أَنَّهُ رَأَى اَلنَّبِيَّ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -يَأْخُذُ لِأُذُنَيْهِ مَاءً خِلَافَ اَلْمَاءِ اَلَّذِي أَخَذَ لِرَأْسِهِ. } أَخْرَجَهُ اَلْبَيْهَقِيّ ُ [1] .
And the words of the Muslim version are:
“he wiped his head taking extra water from that he had taken for the washing of the hands”, and this Hadith is Al-Mahfuz.
مُسْلِمٍ
Abu Huraira (rad):
I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, “My people will come on the Day of Resurrection with bright faces, hands and feet from the traces of Wudu. If any of you can lengthen his brightness, let him do so”. [Agreed upon and this is Muslim’s version].
وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ - رضى الله عنه - قَالَ: سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اَللَّهِ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -يَقُولُ: { "إِنَّ أُمَّتِي يَأْتُونَ يَوْمَ اَلْقِيَامَةِ غُرًّا مُحَجَّلِينَ, مِنْ أَثَرِ اَلْوُضُوءِ, فَمَنْ اِسْتَطَاعَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يُطِيلَ غُرَّتَهُ فَلْيَفْعَلْ. } مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ, وَاللَّفْظُ لِمُسْلِم ٍ [1] .
Narrated ‘Aisha (rad):
Allah’s Messenger (rad) loved to begin with the right while putting on his shoes, combing his hair, in his purification and in all his affairs [Agreed upon].
وَعَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اَللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: { كَانَ اَلنَّبِيُّ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -يُعْجِبُهُ اَلتَّيَمُّنُ فِي تَنَعُّلِهِ, وَتَرَجُّلِهِ, وَطُهُورِهُ, وَفِي شَأْنِهِ كُلِّهِ. } مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْه ِ [1] .
Narrated Abu Huraira (rad):
Allah’s Messenger (rad) said: “When you perform ablution, begin with your right limbs”. [Reported by Al-Arba’a and garded Sahih by Ibn Khuzaima].
وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ - رضى الله عنه - قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اَللَّهِ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -{ إِذَا تَوَضَّأْتُمْ فابدأوا بِمَيَامِنِكُمْ } أَخْرَجَهُ اَلْأَرْبَعَةُ, وَصَحَّحَهُ اِبْنُ خُزَيْمَة َ [1] .
Narrated Al-Mughira bin Shu’ba (rad):
The Prophet (ﷺ) performed ablution and passed wet hands on his forelock, over the turban and over the two leather socks. [ Reported by Muslim].
وَعَنْ اَلْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةٍ - رضى الله عنه - { أَنَّ اَلنَّبِيَّ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -تَوَضَّأَ, فَمَسَحَ بِنَاصِيَتِهِ, وَعَلَى اَلْعِمَامَةِ وَالْخُفَّيْنِ. } أَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِم ٌ [1] .
Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah (rad):
Regarding the Hajj of the Prophet (ﷺ): He said, “Begin with what Allah had begun with” [ Reported by An-Nasa’i in this commanding version while Muslim has reported it in the reporting one].
وَعَنْ جَابِرٍ بْنِ عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ رَضِيَ اَللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا -فِي صِفَةِ حَجِّ اَلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اَللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- قَالَ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -{ اِبْدَؤُوا بِمَا بَدَأَ اَللَّهُ بِهِ } أَخْرَجَهُ النَّسَائِيُّ, هَكَذَا بِلَفْظِ اَلْأَمْر ِ [1] وَهُوَ عِنْدَ مُسْلِمٍ بِلَفْظِ اَلْخَبَر ِ [2] .
Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah (rad):
The Prophet (ﷺ) used to run the water down his elbows while performing ablution [Reported by Ad-Daraqutni with aweak chain of narrators].
وَعَنْهُ قَالَ: { كَانَ اَلنَّبِيَّ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -إِذَا تَوَضَّأَ أَدَارَ اَلْمَاءَ عَلَى مُرْفَقَيْهِ. } أَخْرَجَهُ اَلدَّارَقُطْنِيُّ بِإِسْنَادِ ضَعِيف ٍ [1] .
Narrated Abu Huraira (rad):
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “There is no Wudu for one who does not mention Allah’s Name upon it. [Reported by Ahmad, Abu Da’ud and Ibn Majah with a weak chain of narrators].
وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ - رضى الله عنه - قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اَللَّهِ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -{ لَا وُضُوءَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَذْكُرِ اِسْمَ اَللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ } أَخْرَجَهُ أَحْمَدُ, وَأَبُو دَاوُدَ, وَابْنُ مَاجَهْ, بِإِسْنَادٍ ضَعِيف ٍ [1] .
Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (rad):
Allah’s Mesenger (ﷺ) said: “If there is enough water to fill two pots (Qulla), it carries no impurity,” Another version has: “It does not become unclean”. {Al-Arba’a reported it. Ibn Khuzaima, Ibn Hibban and Al-Hakim graded it Sahih (sound)].
وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اَللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اَللَّهِ صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: { إِذَا كَانَ اَلْمَاءَ قُلَّتَيْنِ لَمْ يَحْمِلْ اَلْخَبَثَ } وَفِي لَفْظٍ: { لَمْ يَنْجُسْ } أَخْرَجَهُ اَلْأَرْبَعَةُ, وَصَحَّحَهُ اِبْنُ خُزَيْمَةَ. وَابْنُ حِبَّانَ [1] .
At-Tirmidhi reported something similar to the above from Sa’id bin Zaid.
وَلِلترْمِذِيِّ: عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ زَيْد ٍ [1] .
and Abu Sa’id like this.
وَأَبِي سَعِيدٍ نَحْوُه ُ [1] .
and Ahmad said that nothing is authenticated in it.
قَالَ أَحْمَدُ: لَا يَثْبُتُ فِيهِ شَيْء ٌ [1] .
Narrated Talha bin Musarrif, quoting his father on the authority of his grandfather:
“I saw Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) rinsing his mouth and sniffing up and blowing his nose with separate scops of water.” [Reported by Abu Da’ud with a weak chain of narrators].
وَعَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ مُصَرِّفٍ, عَنْ أَبِيهِ, عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ: { رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اَللَّهِ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَ اَلْمَضْمَضَةِ وَالِاسْتِنْشَاقِ. } أَخْرَجَهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ بِإِسْنَادِ ضَعِيف ٍ [1] .
Narrated ‘Ali (rad) regarding performance of Wudu:
The Prophet (ﷺ) rinsed his mouth and sniffed and blew (his nose) with water three times. He sniffed up and blew his nose with the same hand from which he took the water. [Reported by Abu Da’ud and An-Nasa’i]
وَعَنْ عَلِيٍّ - رضى الله عنه - -فِي صِفَةِ اَلْوُضُوءِ- { ثُمَّ تَمَضْمَضَ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -وَاسْتَنْثَرَ ثَلَاثًا, يُمَضْمِضُ وَيَنْثِرُ مِنْ اَلْكَفِّ اَلَّذِي يَأْخُذُ مِنْهُ اَلْمَاءَ } أَخْرَجَهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ وَالنَّسَائِيّ ُ [1] .
Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Zaid (rad) regarding Wudu:
The Prophet (ﷺ) put his hand (in the utensil) rinsed (his mouth) and sniffed up and blew (his nose) from one scoop (of water). He did that three times. [Agreed upon].
وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ - رضى الله عنه - -فِي صِفَةِ اَلْوُضُوءِ- { ثُمَّ أَدْخَلَ - صلى الله عليه وسلم -يَدَهُ, فَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ مِنْ كَفٍّ وَاحِدَةٍ, يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثًا } مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْه ِ [1] .
